Youngsters form pyramids and stand on top of one another attempting to reach the handis and break them even as their efforts may be thwarted by water splashed on them by those gathered around. Their objective was to break clay pots filled with butter or curd and tied to ropes as much as 40 feet high.
Lord Krishna was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight during the month of Shravan. The day was celebrated as Janmashtami yesterday. Today it is Gopal Kala, when different foods are eaten after being mixed together - as Krishna is believed to have done with his shepherd friends.
Of the over 600 ''Govinda mandals'' across the city, the most popular ones are at Dadar and Worli, in central Mumbai.
The event is expected to be celebrated throughout the day and to continue late into the night.
